Associa Cares Aids Albuquerque Family After House Fire

May 20, 2013

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – May 20, 2013 – Associa Cares, the philanthropic arm of Associa, recently donated assistance to Walter Gutierrez after his home was destroyed by a fire. The organization made the donation on behalf of Canyon Gate, an Associa company.

The home of Walter Gutierrez, near the top of Coronado Road, had belonged to the Alcala family since the 1950s, but it was destroyed in what is presumed to have been an electrical fire in January. No one was injured.

The home off Merriam Acres Road has served as the beloved setting for family reunions, as related by Melissa Genovese and her mother, Julia Acala Gonyea. It was the long-time residence of Delores Alcala who died in 2002.

“This was an extra special case in that this endeavor crossed state lines,” said Associa Canyon Gate President and CEO Lori Loch-Lee. “An executive at our sister branch M & C has family in the Corrales area and alerted us to this event after it was seen in the local paper. Associa Cares graciously allowed us to step in and help this family, and everyone was very thankful.”

The donation from Associa Cares will allow the Gutierrez to replace items that were lost in the fire, including clothing, furniture and other items.

Associa Cares relies on volunteers from national and local committees to help identify people in both Associa and non-Associa managed communities and properties affected by tragedies. Associa River Management notified Associa about the families and their loss.
